Amateur Archaeologists wanted!

Updated: Feb 6, 2021

It is fun, hard work but good exercise and a chance to get together again and sometimes we are surprised at what we find.

We have the kit, we have the experience but we urgently need younger people to come forward and run our digs and post dig processes. You don’t need any experience - just enthusiasm.

Currently we are in the middle of lockdown and so group activities are not possible. However, there are things you can do. We suggest you study the excavation “how to do leaflets” and excavation reports. These can be found on Our Excavations and Field Walking. And maybe look at other websites too, such as Leicestershire Fieldworkers. These will give you a good idea of what is entailed.

Once the pandemic is over we are happy to run training sessions and even a training test pit. Could we do this in your garden? Or maybe you could get permission from someone else with an interesting site in Great Bowden.

We always need someone with First Aid training on our digs so this could be the time to investigate a course you could take.

Don’t fancy digging? Well, there are plenty of other things to do. The pre dig and post dig processes in fact take longer than the dig itself. Before the dig, research needs to be done on the immediate area so we always dig with a purpose and a question to answer. After the dig the finds need to be cleaned, dried, identified and marked. Reports need to be compiled.

There are just a few restrictions. If you are under 16 you need to have a parent or responsible adult with you. Children are welcome at digs but they must be aware of dangers and under parental control. Dig sites are dangerous places - bit like building sites with pits, trip hazards and sharp tools. We just have to adhere to a few safety rules.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
